About the Library
Librarian: Mrs. Bachfischer
Library Assistant: Mrs. Curry
The major purpose of the MTHS library is to provide students and teachers with services and materials that supplement the resources of the classroom. Reading materials for leisure/individual interests are also provided. The library is open on most school days from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Checking Out
Magazines and vertical files may be checked out for one week. Most audiovisual materials may be checked out overnight. Reference books may not be checked out. All other books may be checked out for three weeks. Items may be renewed as long as they are not needed by other students. (Although items may be renewed, nothing additional can be checked out if there are any overdue items and/or if there are any fines owed.) Students must have their ID cards (cannot use someone else's card) to check out. ALL ITEMS CHECKED OUT ON A STUDENT'S ID CARD ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THAT STUDENT. All items that have been checked out are to be returned to the bookdrop slot located inside the library front door.
Overdues/Fines/Lost or Damaged Items
The fine for overdue items is 20 cents per day per item. If, however, the accumulated fine on an item is $1.00 or less, that fine will be forgiven when the item is returned or renewed. If a fine on an item accumulates to more than $1.00 but that fine is paid on the same day that the overdue item is returned or renewed, that fine will be cut in half. If overdues or fines are not taken care of within three weeks, the student's name will be turned in to the office at that time and will continue to be turned in weekly thereafter until the obligation is cleared. The regular overdue notice handed out daily by an English teacher will be the only notification given prior to the name being turned in. Replacement cost is charged for all lost or damaged items except magazines--the charge for a lost or damaged magazine is $4.00. The charge for a damaged or missing barcode or for a missing date due card is $2.00.
Copy Costs
Copy machine and computer printers--no charge for school-related B&W copies; 5 cents for personal B&W copies; 15 cents for all color copies.
Study Hall Passes
Admittance to the library from study hall is by a pass requested from the library prior to study hall or by a pass given by a classroom teacher for a specific assignment requiring the use of library resources. Study hall monitors do not issue passes to the library. Study hall students who come to the library on the passes issued by the library are to remain for the entire period--those who come on passes from teachers will return to study hall 5 minutes before the end of the class period (there are occasional exceptions to this rule). No library passes are issued for periods when the library is reserved by a teacher for class research--if a student needs to work on something for a particular class, the classroom teacher can issue the student a pass from study hall to the library to work on that project for that teacher.
Interlibrary Loan
There may be times when a student may need materials not available in our library and may want to borrow through interlibrary loan. Interlibrary loan is a courtesy extended by one library to another. Since the materials involved do not belong to our library, it is essential that they be returned on time. The fine for an overdue item obtained through interlibrary loan is 50 cents per day per item. Abuse of this privilege by a particular student will result in denial of future interlibrary loan requests made by that student.
Internet Use in the Library
Students will not be allowed to enter chat rooms, to download, or to play games (exceptions may be made for educational games) using library computers. Other Internet use will be at the discretion of the library personnel. All general school and specific library rules pertaining to Internet use must be adhered to or access will be denied.
